SAMMANFATTNING
The ability to monitor a structure and detect damage before it reaches critical levels is of outmost importance in big structures such as aircraft. Additional global damage detection techniques are of interest and this has led to development of methods that examine changes in the dynamic characteristics of structures. The concept behind these methods is that damage in a structure changes the modal parameters because they are functions of the physical properties of the structure.

This paper describes the process of detection, and if possible, also localization of the damage in an aircraft structure. Simulation and analysis is carried out in I-DEAS with a FE model that has the same dynamic characteristics as an ordinary aircraft. There are eight areas on the FE model that are subject of damage introduction.

Results presented in the report show that global damage detection and localization in an aircraft structure by monitoring changes in the modal parameters is possible. Based on the results, this paper provides a basis for development of global non-destructive health monitoring methods for ageing aircraft.
