SUMMARY
The aim of this essay is to examine the characters of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and to analyse the parts they play in the murder of King Duncan. The text itself is permeated with the atmosphere of darkness and evil. The theme of consciousness and guilt, in the sense of which part Macbeth and Lady Macbeth knowingly play in the murder of King Duncan, is what this study will concentrate on. There are different ways to interpret their different parts, but the major claims of this essay will show that Shakespeare succeeded in creating a play that deals with essential issues such as the nature of evil.
