SUMMARY
This essay discusses the Oedipus complex within Malcolm, a character in
V.C. Andrews’ Garden of shadows. The Oedipus complex is defined in the
first chapter and in the second and third chapter the essay discusses
Malmcolm’s relationship to women as well as men and how the relationships
are connected to his unsolved Oedipus complex. Chapter three is finished by
a comparison between Malcolm and the original Oedipus written by Sophocles
in 430 B.C. As a conclusion the essay has argued that Malcolm could be
called “the modern Oedipus” as he has got a lot of elements that are
typical for the Oedipus complex.
