SUMMARY
All forms of electricity production, transport and use give rise to impacts on the environment. Coal and oil combustion for example gives rise to water discharges, airborne emissions and produces solid wastes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the choice of methodology influences the result from studies that values the externalities of electricity production using coal and oil. A log-linear model was used with dummies for method, GDP per capita, number of externalities and a region dummy as explanatory variables. The dependent variable was the studies’ estimates of the external costs. The studies included were those that estimated the external costs of using coal and oil in electricity production, with exceptions for the studies that were impossible to get a hold on. The conclusion drawn from the regression results was that there is evidence for the conclusion that the methodological choice influences the estimates of external costs.
