SUMMARY
This paper is founded on a search to find a solution to what is believed to
be a political problem within the process of granting aid for development.
The problem is that having two methods for granting aid might cause
competition between them, and this means much needed aid is not reaching
underdeveloped countries. The two methods that exist for granting
development aid are multilateral and bilateral aid. The aim of this paper is
to investigate into a multilateral and bilateral donor’s reasons for
granting aid. The bilateral donor analysed is Sweden, while the multilateral
donor analysed is the World Bank. It is hoped that by comparing these
donors’ idea of development and reasons for granting aid, a single type of
donor can be created, thus making development aid more effective. The
results of the paper show that it might not be possible to create a single
donor, however there is plenty of scope for bilateral and multilateral donors
to work closer together.
