SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of Swedish MNCs’ use
of expatriate assignments for individual career development. In order to
reach this purpose, employment of expatriate assignments as a means for
career development, expatriate support during the expatriate assignment, and
repatriation planning were studied in a qualitative, multiple-case study
based on personal interviews with key personnel within the area of research
in four Swedish MNCs. Findings indicate that employment of expatriate
assignments for individual career development is not extensively adopted by
Swedish MNCs, and even though a long-term perspective of expatriation to a
certain extent exists, the responsibility for taking initiative is placed
primarily upon the individuals.
