SUMMARY
The IT industry is rapidly growing and undergoing constant change. This also applies to the tourism industry that has proven to be very suitable for the embracing of the IT technology. As a result, more and more tourism organizations use web sites to supply and exchange information. This has led to the purpose of this thesis, which was to gain a better understanding of how web sites are used within the tourism industry. To reach this purpose, web site objectives and web site descriptions within the Swedish tourism industry were investigated. This was done by conducting interviews and direct observations of two subunits within a single case study. The study shows that Swedish tourism web site objectives mainly focus on bringing benefits to the users of the sites, rather than to the owners of the sites. It also indicates that web site objectives seem to direct how the web sites can be described, and that the functionality and ease of use of the web sites are related to web site design.
